Default Learn to Use Recipes but Improvise as Needed

Hey y'all! I'm trying to get better at cooking by following recipes, but sometimes I feel like I need to improvise when I don't have all the ingredients or want to add my own twist. How do you guys balance following a recipe and making it your own? Any tips on not messing things up when you go off-script?

Learning to use recipes as a guide while improvising is a killer skill in the kitchen. For example, if you're trying to figure out how to make Yangzhou fried rice but you're missing a few ingredients, don't sweat it! The key is understanding the core elements of the dish—like using day-old rice for that perfect texture and balancing flavors with soy sauce, sesame oil, and a bit of sugar. Once you've got the basics down, you can swap out ingredients based on what you have. If you're out of BBQ pork, try using some leftover chicken or even tofu. I found some great tips on this on Dish Magazine’s website—they really help you get creative without losing the essence of the dish. Give it a try and happy cooking!
