In Magento there are a few ways in which customers can be subscribed to newsletters. One way is when a user creates a new customer account; there's a checkbox for signing up for the newsletter. Registered customers can subscribe from the settings of their account. By default, guests are also allowed to subscribe. They can do this by using the Newsletter block on the frontend. From the admin panel you can subscribe/unsubscribe customers.

This functionality can save a lot of time and expense that could be spent on integrating third-party applications and other features for the Magento platform. Creating and sending newsletters is an essential part of the overall customer engagement and retention process.
