As in maintenance i assume you mean, new pages and posts added to the website, extensions upgraded to their latest versions, magento patched and updated ??

Anyone who thinks you can run a successful website in 2014 without consistent work is either going to get Slapped by google and loose all your customers, hacked by a competitor or someone even more lazy than the person who doesn't keep their software unto date.

YES MAINTENANCE IS YOUR NUMBER 1 CONSIDERATION FOR LONG TERM SUCCESS

Of course. The page needs to be updated. You do not have to sit all day to update though. What we did before is to allot sometime each week to update the content of the website.

Yes, it is necessary to avoid unnecessary superfluous, still your site is up and active.

Your computer and your website are very much like cars. They both need maintenance to keep running smoothly. When your computer starts running worse, gets viruses, or can’t run the most modern programs at an adequate speed, you feel like it’s time to run some maintenance tasks on it, usually by a tech-savvy person/company.

When your car is acting strange, moving slower, making loud noises, you take it to a mechanic.

Both of those services aren’t free. They are taken care of by trained professionals who charge hourly rates.

When your site is acting weird, or not acting at all, you talk with your web design agency. Depending on the warranty period you have in your contract with them, and presuming you do, they have to run some tasks to detect the source of the problem. So, maintenance is definitely needed.

Web technology is constantly changing, and some of those changes can benefit your search engine placement and the overall function of your site.

A preventative maintenance program can help plan routine maintenance such as inspections, part replacements, and fluid changes. When a piece of equipment is not maintained, it begins to naturally degrade over time. This forces the machine to work harder than necessary, decreasing efficiency and increasing costs.
