SSL certificate is must for the website for two main reasons such as:

1. To accept credit card payments on the website
2. TO protect the credit card information from fraud activities

It depends on the payment gateway you used in your website. Some payment gateways process the payment transaction with in the site, so to protect customer credit card details you need SSL certificate. Some payment gateways take care of the full payment process, that time you need not to buy the SSL certificate.

If you are accepting payments then you must buy SSL enabled hosting plans, However Google officially said that they will preference more to SSL enabled websites, I don't know how much is this true.

Google chrome and firfox are rolling out with a unsafe warning to all http sites as of july 2018 is easy enough to get to https , you can get a lets encrypt certificate which most up to date hosting providers now provide free and then go into your website root and redirect all http requests to https, google will look for a htttps by default. If you run a ecommerce website design however i would advise purchasing a more secure ssl certificate to avoid middle man attacks,
