Basically a cohort is a set of users or visitors who share same characteristics. Cohort analysis breaks users into related groups making it easy to track retention, engagement and how users react to your website/app

A cohort is a group of users who share a common characteristic that is identified in this report by an Analytics dimension. For example, all users with the same Acquisition Date belong to the same cohort. The Cohort Analysis report lets you isolate and analyze cohort behavior.

Why don't you just open google and search the same there?
no need to post easily searchable questions here just for links.

Cohort Analysis in Google Analytics is a weird thing. Web Analytics tools are built to track things that happen on the site and do it just fine, while there's the other part of the equation: out-of-site activity. Meaning that Google Analytics is practically useless when it comes to analyzing what and why happens when your users log out and leave your site.

In a cohort analysis instead of looking at users/customers individually, they are placed into related groups known as cohorts. The Cohort Analysis report tells you how well your website is performing. And, it gives you in-depth insights into user behavior on your site.
