Little bit affects in the rankings because while if it results in 404 error then your website bounce rate will be high then there is a chance that impact in the rankings. Of course, 404 error pages affect rankings.

    It depends,

There are two factors.Broken links or deleted/removed contents
Users tried to access pages that do not exits or which they do not have permission.
If your website contains broken links or removed contents then 404 error will effect your optimization cause when search engine bots crawl your websites (they crawl from link to link) they will audit the contents and find if those content are relevant to users. If so then they will rank in results and if your link is broken then they will hit 404 error means no content and it will effect your optimization.

"Generally, 404 errors don’t impact your site’s ranking in Google, and you can safely ignore them."

When Google says "generally" this tends to mean "in most cases" or "not directly" or "there may be secondary effects"... you get the idea.

Yes and no. having a 404 that the SE finds is not going to hurt you, it will eventually remove it from its index, but if you have a broken link pointing to a 404 then yes

In theory, 404s have an impact on rankings. But not the rankings of a whole site. If a page returns a 404 error code, it means it doesn't exist, so Google and other search engines will not index it.

And, If you have access denied to some pages then you can use robots.txt file to stop bot from crawling those pages or if user try to visit pages that does not exits then there is nothing to worry about if they hit 404 error.
