    A canonical URL is the preferred version of a set of pages with similar content that can create duplicate content cases. The canonical URL must be chosen carefully by the Webmaster of the site concerned. Adding the canonical tag allows site owners to identify identical content sets and tell Google: "Of all these pages with very similar content, please do not include in search results that this canonical URL ".

    Canonical Urls are on the page and define which url the page should be indexed as. This is used when you have one or more url parameters that might resolve that same content.
