Can 404 pages affect rankings?

    Google's official answer is "no, we don't lower the grades of your site just because you have 404 pages." In reality, 404 errors can indirectly hurt organic rankings.

    Agree with Vishnu's answer. 404 affects indirectly. you can also check yourself if you are checking the keywords position daily. check the position of the day when your site gives 404 errors. you will see slight rank drop from previous day.

    Code 404 refers to a “not found” error message alerting you to the fact that your browser was able to connect to the server it was looking for, but that its target page couldn’t be found.

    404 error pages affect rankings. Google doesn’t crawl 404 error pages. When submitting a sitemap to Google webmasters, if any page has 404 error than Google will give you errors in search console.

    404 Errors do affect the website and that too negatively. It halts user experience which can in turn increase bounce rate of your website

    A 404 page never harm seo but it cause to reduce the website as user friendly.

    Custom 404 Error Page is SEO-friendly but 404 Error is Not
