You can not compare, because both are important, both has own importance one for search engine and another for user.

I personally feel like websites need both a HTML and XML sitemap in order to clarify the website’s purpose and goal, avoiding duplicated data and to minimize the number of steps it takes to travel from one page to another. Additionally, a sitemap will communicate the website’s architecture and hierarchy.

HTML sitemaps are created and available for viewing by website visitors to help them navigate through a website. Usually, they are setup with a linear structure showing the hierarchy of the site from top level pages to lower level ones. They provide the user with a very easy to read outline of content, making their navigation to their desired content easier.

XML sitemaps are a little different from HTML sitemaps, because they are intended for search engines and spiders not website visitors. XML sitemaps can be visible with any web browser, but their main function is to provide the URLs of a website to search engines. They even show data on how often a page has been changed compared to other URLs on the same site. This information is very important for search engines because the more links they are provided with, the more a website will appear in search engine results.

A sitemap generator tool is the perfect way to create XML and HTML sitemaps with ease, and you can create multiple sitemaps if your website has more than 50k pages.

Both are important - xml sitemap are created for search engine, it help search engines like Google, Bing to quickly index pages which you want to index. And Html sitemap for end-user, better readability for user.

hello..The simplest explanation is that XML is primarily for the search engines while HTML is written for the users. A XML sitemap protocol is specifically intended for search engine spiders. At its root, XML is a file that includes all the behind the scenes activity on a web site. For search enine xml is better

Both seems to be the important ones. But XML sitemap can be added with a priority. This is because, we don't find that most of the sites holding the HTML sitemaps which in turn all the websites hold the XML sitemap as a required one.

Both are a different thing but having the XML sitemap is good. Having the HTML sitemap for the large websites is good for the user point of view to understand the website in the better way.

Most companies are familiar with and already have an HTML site map which includes their most important pages or categories of pages. This HTML sitemap page is often coded to look exactly the same as other webpages on the site, and is primarily used as a guide for new website visitors to find specific pages. Sometimes these HTML sitemaps are static and must be modified when a page is added or deleted to the site, and other times they are dynamic and are automatically updated using PHP or some other scripting language.

By contrast, an XML sitemap is primarily used by search engines. Search engine spiders use the XML sitemap as a guide to crawl each listed page on a website and to get important information on the last time a page was updated or changed. This is particularly important for internal pages that may not have many outside links pointing to them.

The case can be made for most websites to use both HTML and XML site maps. HTML site maps serve an important UX function because visitors do not have to navigate multiple pages to find what they are looking for. Additionally, HTML sitemaps make a great 404 page – if someone types in the URL of a page that no longer exists, they can at least get to the section they were looking for from the sitemap. We typically recommend an XML sitemap to ensure that all content on your business website gets indexed and not just the popular pages.

Is there ever a reason to forgo having an XML sitemap? For people with small, static websites an HTML sitemap may suffice (at least until the business starts to grow and produce more content).

However, it’s well known that regularly updated content has a direct impact on SEO, and at Bear Creek Web we recommend that all websites (even relatively small ones) have XML sitemaps in place from the start to make the process of updating easier and faster as the website grows.
