    We can increase page speed in magento by using following steps

    1. Proper caching i.e. make cache of pages(cms/catalog/collection).
    2. Using minified css and js.
    3. Close unused sql connections.
    4. Use Expires Headers function to avoid loading unnecessary http requests when same customer visits your website again.
    5. Use CDN.
    6. Enable Flat Catalog:- This merges data from various tables into one table therefore improving the response time of MySql queries.
    7. Use light weight and optimized images.
    8. Update index i.e do indexing time to time.
    9. Do query caching in MySql

    query_cache_type = 1
    query_cache_size = 32M
    query_cache_limit=2M

    This will make cache of queries in mysql which will be used by magento

    One important tips to speed up Magento site that is not mentioned is deferring JavaScript files loading after all HTML and CSS files loading so that a web page will render HTML and CSS in advance.
    As you know, a normal page loading starts with JavaScript and CSS before HTML and the content of page. Therefore, this is the reason why Magento sites load slowly and causes customers leave sites quickly. To solve this problem, we use a Magento extension called Defer JavaScript which can speed up Magento sites effectively without making any complicated code changes

    - Automatically defer parsing of JavaScript till the last moment after all HTML and CSS loading
    - Reduce loading time and speed up Magento sites (both Magento 1 and Magento 2)
    - Exclude path/controller in order not to be affected by deferring JAvaScript
    - Work well with Full Page Cache

    Along with Magento 1 version, Defer JavaScript for Magento 2 also brings awesome benefits for sites when speeding up and reducing loading time effectively which improves customer experience

    1, Ensure you are running the latest version of magento.
    2, Enable the flat catalog module for products and categories in the magento admin panel.
    3, Enable caching to reduce the number of database operations required for each page request.
    4, Keep the number of third party/community extensions to a minimum.
    5, experiment with the magento compiler.
    6, Install a PHP opcode cache like APC or eAccelerator.
    7, Optimize the MYSQL server.
