They are the heading tags which play a vital role for SEO. Google also gives first priority to heading tag. You can place H1 tag on top of the web page and H2 would be sub heading.

Search engines recognize the copy in your header tags as more important than the rest. This starts with your h1 and works its way down in importance to the h2, h3 and so on. The h1 tag should contain your targeted keywords, ones that closely relate to the page title and are relevant to your content. The h2 tag is a subheading and should contain similar keywords to your h1 tag. Your h3 is then a subheading for your h2 and so on. Think of them as a hierarchy based on importance, the above being more important than the below.

Why are h1, h2 and h3 header tags important for SEO?

Header tags are an important on-page SEO factor because they’re used to communicate to the search engines what your website is about. You can’t, however, just throw in whatever content you want into these headers. It’s important to utilize your header tags with short-tail and long-tail keywords. As search engines crawl your site, they will pick up on the headers and recognize the keywords you are using as important.

You can use H1 tag only once. It's the main heading. Then, others (h2,h3...) can be used any times. They are also heading, so it must be nested.

When I spare, i check onpage several sites - for fun and see what learning techniques. There are something to learn, which is drawn from the experiences of their mistakes.
Many sites are only h1, h3 and without h2 .This is the most dangerous mistake. It significantly reduces the quality of entries and the quality of the website. Try to put as fully as possible Heading tags, and do not forget to allocate keywords on which to reasonably and naturally as possible.

There are six header tags, ranging from H1 to H6. The most important heading tag is the h1 tag and least important is the h6 tag. In HTML coding the header tags from h1 to h6 form a hierarchy. This means that if you skip any of the tag numbers (ie. jump from 1 to 3) the heading structure will be broken, and this is not ideal for on-page SEO.

The coding should be something like what is shown below:

    <h1>Main Heading</h1>
    <h2>Secondary Heading 1</h2>
<h3>Sub-section of the secondary heading 1</h3>
    <h2>Secondary Heading 2</h2>
<h3>Sub-section of the secondary heading 2</h3>

The h1 tag is the most important tag. Every page must have an h1 tag.

Header tags from SEO point of view

Relevancy: Search engine spiders check the relevancy of the header tag with the content associated with it.
Keyword Consistency: The search engine spiders check the keyword consistency between the header tags and other parts of the page.
The Importance of an h1 Tag: The h1 is the most important tag and it should never be skipped on a page. Search spiders pay attention to the words used in the h1 tag as it should contain a basic description of the page content, just as the page <title> does .
Enriched User Experience: Heading tags give the user a clear idea of what the page content is about. Search engines give much importance to user-experience on a site, meaning the presence of heading tags becomes an important component of SEO.
