ROR (Resources of a Resource) sitemap is an XML format that describes web content as classified objects. ROR expands on the RSS protocol with its own extensions. It is describing any object on a website (sitemaps, services, products, menus, reviews, images, contact info, etc), so any search engines can better understand its content.

The ROR (structured) feed is an independent Master XML format file you place on your site. The Master XML format file describes the different types of content you have, but in generic terms (the idea is that search engines will better understand them). These structured feeds are stored in the ROR feed called ror.xml which is placed in the main directory of your Website.

ROR feeds are pushed as a more detailed Google Sitemaps option because it allows you to put information about products, services, feeds, articles, reviews, archives, and many other objects, all of which can be indexed by all of the major search engines.

The main benefit of having a ROR File is to simply help the search engines do their job more efficiently. This is a sitemap actually.

ROR sitemaps were created by and the format is managed by RORweb.com and has been around since about late 2004/early 2005. It is based on RSS and XML, but goes beyond the typical RSS or XML feed (yes, RSS is written using XML). The ROR format allows you to describe items such as your web pages in greater detail to more search engines than ever before.

ROR sitemaps combine the detail of Google site maps and the simplicity of RSS sitemaps, then go even further. Using the ROR format, you can turn this 'site feed' into your product feed, an article list, a staff biography sheet, an event listing, and so much more.

There is a simple structure that allows everything in one file or an advanced structure that allows for a central directory file that points to separate files for your ROR sitemap, products, your events calendar, and all of the ROR satellite files. This advanced format makes updating a portion of your ROR feed much easier and allows several different sources for ROR updates.

I personally don't use or recommend ROR sitemaps anymore for my site. They were good at the time they were emerged but they got dumped over the years as they did not offer any substantial benefits. In fact, I remember people complaint about it that they got into issues with crawling using them. I would say that just use the standard format like XML, HTML sitemaps.

ROR is a rapidly growing XML format for describing any object on a website (sitemaps, products, services, menus, images, reviews, contact info, business info, etc), so any search engines can better understand its content.
