Sometimes resetting the permalink structure will quickly solve 404 error from a recent change t your installation. Go to Admin->setting->permalinks and click save without altering anything.

sitemap showing warning might be two reasons behind it :-
First reason might be permalink structure and second thing might be server issue, if your server is not working properly then you will face several issues.

Would it be possible to simply add a sitemap.xml file to the root domain of the website design and submit that to google ?

Well its easy enough to test, simply fo to google webmaster tools and look under your sitemaps tab on the left hand, it will show you what has been submitted you may also look under your websites index tab to see if google has indexed and of your pages. You can type site:www.yourdomain.com in google search to have google bring up all your indexed pages. If you go back to google webmaster tools you can manually submit your sitemap under www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml google will try to fetch it and will show you the results of what it has found.

Well what do you mean by hacking ? you had enough knowledge to edit the websites files within the template to produce better results, yoast and other plugins are alright, but no lugin or script or list of top ten will ever beat customised and tailored search engine optimisation.

Make a XML sitemap that can be submitted to Google, Bing and other web search tools to enable them to slither your site better.

Make a Text sitemap to have a plain rundown of every one of your pages.

Create a HTML webpage guide to enable site guests to effectively explore on your website.

Initially, go to Google Search Console and select your site. Enter the URL where you've spared your sitemap. It should finish with ".xml" since it's a XML document. Snap "Test" to see the subtleties of the sitemap.
