I wondered if any of you could tell me if Magento is the right package for what I want to achieve please?

I want to build a industry portal that is a resource of information and to include forums and chat trade media advertisements etc. I know Magento is good for a company selling its wears but do you recommend it as a portal?

If not any recommendations of software frameworks for doing this please?
