What is the benefit of sitemap submission ?

What if I can't create a sitemap? I have a service (classifieds) with millions of pages. When I still had hundreds of thousands of pages, I tried to create a sitemap but after 10,000 pages every sitemap generator quit working.

Seriously, for Google webmaster tools, all you need to do is submit your index page. They will scan your website without the full sitemap just fine.
