Not really, as for very beginner you do not need any html knowledge as Magento will let you set up most of basic optimization via admin area. My tip is to keep your store backyard clean. Create and actively use only the CMS pages you actually need, and if possible remove the redundant ones. Create each of your products carefully, give them appropriate titles, descriptions, tags. Do not rush things. Well-configured product will do much good for you and will let you save a lot of money later when you have thousands of products which suddenly require serious optimization. And of course, remove the products that you will not use in the future anymore to avoid problems with already taken URL links. Rewriting tons of links to be search engine and user friendly once things got really messy is the last thing you want to do. Finding appropriate URL for your product once you have 10 similar positions after several previous attempts to rewrite some of those URLS, will be a true pain. That is why, keep your shop clean - in order to use crystal clear and descriptive links to your products and pages, and have no problems with finding good ones after years of shop's activity.

Make unique description for each product and unique content for each cms page. Make sure your website resolves canonicalization problem. Do not forget about auto created Sitemap.xml file, configure your robots.txt file too.
Many of interesting things you definitely want to configure/set up can be found in System -> Configuration -> Web/Design/Catalog. This is only the tip of the iceberg, but this should help you and show the right direction for further actions.
