It 's too slow, redis is better but not much. You can check this tutorial speed up magento, I think you may choose the wrong hosting and configure server wrong.

What would be a good speed for a magento site? 1-3 sec? And how many request should it make for the homepage I currently have around 79 and the page is 1.5mb big!

Your ideal target should be 1 second. Every content/feature that makes the 1-second goal hard should be heavily examined in term od added value. 1.5mb is definitively too much!

Please feel free to follow the recommandations given using www.dareboost.com on your website! Opening a waterfall you should see that your backend is not the first culprit.

mowz, your page size is really high!

Are you currently doing anything to optimize images? You can also set up a CDN from Rackspace or Amazon to host your images on servers all around the world. There are also plugins that will do this for you automatically.

To minimize the site load speed, you need to optimize images, minify CSS & Javascript. I would recommend to try FME Magento Optimization services to speedup Magento website. https://www.fmeextensions.com/magento-services.html

For Magento 2, Defer JavaScript extension helps to delay JavaScript loading till the last moment so that the site can perform better and faster. Besides, this Magento Defer JavaScript extension also defers Iframes effectively to contribute to reduce loading time and speed up websites.

Hello! There are some basic techniques that help to solve most performance problems. They are:
*minimization of JavaScript and CSS files
*optimization of the image size and format
*usage of Full Page Cache technology
    *Google PageSpeed Module

However, there are some more complicated methods that our company uses for complicated cases:
    * Change your hosting provider. The lack of hosting resources always results in a website performance degradation and slower load time. Sometimes, issues with a hosting result in the long downtimes, which irreversibly leads to the loss of both regular and potential customers.
    * Reduce #of server (HTTP) requests. The more requests, the longer the server response time is, and the longer it will take a page to be fully loaded. The number of server requests depends on the amount and type of content on the page that is expected to load.
    * After a thorough test, find problem places and completely review your code. Buggy code can be found in many places throughout the website. However, most often this issue arises after the integration of poor quality third-party extensions or custom features added by inexperienced Magento developers.
    * Use Content Delivery Network. CDN is a network of connected servers that are used to help in faster delivery of the content. Copies of the website are stored at multiple data centers that are geographically distributed all over the world in order to provide users with faster and more reliable access to the website.
