Magentoconnect config.ini file error

I'm trying to install extensions to my ecommerce site. When I go through System>Magento Connect>Magento Connect Manager then enter the ID password, I get the following page:

Not valid config.ini file.


That's it, just Not valid config.ini file.

I looked in the downloader folder. The config.ini file is exactly the same as another magento site in which the magentoconnect actually works.

It's a one line text file that reads root_channel=community

That's it. Any help? I'm unable to access any extensions until this is fixed.
